Cloth Wipes 101

I did not start out using cloth wipes.  When a friend found out I was going to use cloth diapers, she asked me, “Are you going to use cloth wipes also?”

With an incredulous look on my face I responded, “I’m not that crazy!”  I had never even considered using cloth wipes, and I didn’t know people actually did that.  To be honest, I thought it was gross.

As I look back, I can’t see a difference in the “gross factor” between cloth wipes and cloth diapers.  Either way, you have to deal with poo, and either way, it has to get washed.

It so happened that I received a closet full of disposable wipes at my baby shower.  These were in addition to the ones I was already stockpiling for baby’s arrival.  However, once the stockpile ran out and I started buying those wipes, I realized that I was just wasting money.

On top of everything, I found myself sometimes wrapping the wipes in the dirty diaper, just as you would a disposable.  The result was bits of disposable wipes coming through my washer and dryer.  Ewwwww.  Cloth wipes are easier, because they can be thrown into the diaper pail with your diapers.  No trash can needed!

Thus began my journey into cloth wipes.  A friend had mentioned that she used cloth wipes, so I turned to her for suggestions and a wipe solution recipe.

Types of Wipes
I have tried several kinds of wipes, and even made my own.  Here are homemade wipesmy preferences.  I really like WAHM wipes.  They are usually doubled sided, soft flannel, and well made.  I have purchased some on eBay, I have made some, and I have twisted my mom’s arm into making some for me.  These wipes have held up the best!  It really helps if the edges are serged.  I don’t have a serger, so the edges on my homemade wipes are starting to fray slightly.

DIY Baby WipesThis is how I finished the edges on my homemade wipes without a serger – zig zag over the edge.

I have also tried the Kissaluvs wipes.  They have soft bamboo terry cloth on one side that is good if you need to scrub the bum a little.  The other side is flannel.  These wipes are a little pricey at $2 a wipe!

For those who prefer organic cotton, FuzziBunz makes a nice thick wipe.  Again, they are a little bit of an investment at $21 for 10 wipes.

Some people just use old washcloths.  I just think that they are a little bit rough to use on baby’s skin.

Size of Wipes
Size is important.  I like to store my cloth wipes in an old disposable wipes box.  (I prefer the kind with the rubber sleeve around the opening).  7x7” or 8x8” wipes fit the best when simply folded in half.  I got in a hurry once during an eBay purchase, and ended up with 5x7” wipes that aren’t really good for much!

Solution
You can go as simple as using plain warm water on your cloth wipes, or you can purchase wipe solution.  There are also several options in between.

I have found that I like something with a little more “oomph” than just water.  I want to be sure the area is cleaned well!  I usually make my own solution, using some baby wash/shampoo, and baby/olive oil.  Some people even add essential oils, but that also adds to the cost of your solution.  Here’s what I do:

4 cups hot water
3 Tbsp. baby wash (I like the lavender vanilla night time stuff)
2 Tbsp. baby oil

I just recently started using Chubby Cherubs Honey Bun Drops.  They are little cubes of wipe solution that you dissolve in water.  We will be carrying these at Doable Diapers soon.  I like these drops because they do have the essential oils and natural products that are good for cleaning and soothing my baby’s skin.

I store my wipes solution in an old water bottle with a squeeze top.  I PICT0036just squirt some over the wipes in the box as I need them.  Some people store their solution in a spray bottle and just spray the wipe as needed.  I find that it doesn’t feel very moist, and it doesn’t seem to clean as easily that way.

Other Info
I have about 40 wipes in my stash.  I like to use them as face wipes, to clean up sticky hands after dinner, and for anything else “on the go”.  As a result, I use a few more wipes than normal.  I haven’t thrown any wipes away yet, and we’ve been doing this for about a year now!

Some people prefer to use disposable wipes when not at home.  I use a Planet Wise wet bag and take my pre-moistened cloth wipes with me when I go out.  It’s no different than taking your cloth diapers on the go!

Cloth wipes are easy to care for.  Just toss in the diaper pail and launder them with your diapers.  My husband keeps asking me why I hang them out to dry.  I don’t really have a good answer, but I think they would start to stink if I left them damp for a couple of days before I used them.

That is cloth wipes in a nutshell.  Do you have comments, suggestions, or questions?  Leave me a comment and let me know!

Obsession Confession–Alethea

Alethea is a good friend that I met through my mom.  (They attend the same Bible Study together).  Alethea was already using cloth diapers when my little girl was born.  She wrote to me and explained cloth wipes, and also introduced me to Rumparooz diapers.  When my little girl started sleeping through the night…and wetting through her diaper, I turned to Alethea.  I hope you enjoy learning a little more about her!

  1. Name: Alethea
  2. Children: 1, cute little 2 and 1/2 year old girl whose name is Taliah
  3. Occupation:  I stay home and take care of Taliah. Oh, yeah, I also clean and attempt to cook, wash diapers, and every Monday night I attend Bible Study Fellowship!
  4. Where do you live? Denver, CO
  5. Is your hubby on board with using cloth diapers? He sure is, but really he is for anything that will save us money.  Besides, I think he thinks the diapers are really cool as he sometimes tells friends all about them before I even think to- he has actually been known to bring out a cloth diaper to demonstrate how easy and "fun" they really are.
  6. When did you start cloth diapering?  We started cloth diapers when Taliah was about 6 months old.  Wish I would have know about them earlier... I plan to use them from the start when we receive another little one!
  7. What was your main reason for switching to cloth diapers?  My main reason for switching to cloth diapers was to save money.
  8. Give the short story of how you started using cloth diapers.  I don't exactly remember how I heard about cloth diapers, but I started researching them and found a shop that did free diaper demos and gave a trial package (several types/styles of diapers to try before you buy- the cost of the package was then deducted from your purchase of your first stash).  I worked with the "trial" diapers for about a week, but even before that was pretty convinced I wanted to do the pocket diaper perfect fit, the ones that grow with your baby.  The reason for this was so that I would save money and have a stash that would fit an older child and a younger child.  I went with the Rump-a-rooz, but have since found Fuzzi-Buns because of Doable Diapers and love them!
  9. What is your favorite brand and style of diapers?  I like the Fuzzi-Bunz one size.  I like the fact that you get an extra set of elastic for each diaper to help with wear and tear.  Although, I think sometimes the cloth diaper you love is very dependent on the "form" of your child.  I love Rump-a-rooz, but think they may not have been the best fit for my daughter.
  10. How many diapers are in your stash? I think I have 20.
  11. Share a blooper or “newbie” story from your cloth diapering experiences.  This isn't really a blooper, but I found getting the right over-night diaper that wouldn't leak took a lot of trial and error, and truly still does.
  12. Do you have a tip to share with others?  I like washing my diapers first thing in the morning so they can hang and dry all day then stuffing them before I go to bed so they are all ready to go the next day.
  13. When you started using cloth diapers, what is one thing you wish you had known?  All of the other options and styles and maybe done a little more mix and match.
  14. What is the greatest issue or problem you’ve had with cloth diapers, and how did you resolve it?  Right now it is getting the residual stink out ever since we acquired a HE washer.  I can't quite get it to work- but I am getting better results with Rockin' Green detergent.
  15. Regarding cloth diapers, is there anything you would like to know? Why everyone doesn't use cloth diapers on their baby?  :)
  16. What are your other hobbies, interests, and obsessions?  I love hanging out with my family!  Taliah is a gift and she gets more and more fun every day.  I love being involved with Bible Study Fellowship which currently takes up most of my time when not with Taliah or my husband.  I love to read and take walks- especially in the fall.  I enjoy going to the movies and wish we could eat out more, simply because then I wouldn't have to cook!  :)
  17. What are your favorite blogs and websites?  I follow unclutterer, Doable Diapers, So I married a Mennonite, The Blaze, and Essential oils.
  18. Tell us a little about your personality.  Hmmm... I am pretty outgoing, love Jesus, love family, and love to veg out every once in awhile.  I have strong opinions, and get pretty fired up about things- I like to call it being passionate.  :)

Sorry I’ve been absent…

I’m been a little remiss in my blogging here.  We had family in town to celebrate my daughter’s first birthday!  She wore her Gumball Rumparooz to the party (Ben’s favorite diaper), and it is now affectionately called “The Party Diaper!”

Elaine's 1st BirthdayA little shy at first…

Elaine's 1st Birthday…not so shy anymore!  I was concerned about the frosting staining her diaper, but it rinsed out fine.  We found another great use for our diaper sprayer – washing away cake and frosting!

There are a few changes to note at Doable Diapers…

1.  FuzziBunz should be restocked completely (with the exception of Dreamsicle) next week.  I am looking forward to putting inventory woes behind me.  This is definitely our most popular diaper!

2.  Rumparooz now comes with the choice of either microfiber insert or hemp insert.  You can upgrade to the hemp insert for just $2.00.  This is a really great choice for several reasons.  First, it is a natural fiber for those of you who have this preference.  Second, it is a very “thirsty” insert for those of you with heavy wetters.  Third, it is very trim and makes a fabulous overnight insert.  We are in the process of switching to Rumparooz Hemp for our exclusive nighttime diaper.

3.  There are a bunch of new products arriving soon and being released soon.

We are looking forward to the arrival of Rockin’ Green Funk Rock – a super ammonia buster.  I can’t wait to put this product to work!

The FuzziBunz hemp diapers, and hemp inserts should be arriving in a couple of weeks.

Rumparooz is putting the final touches on their wet bags and pail liners.  These products are made from the same fabulous waterproof TPU that you find in the Rumaprooz diapers, and they are available in every color and print!

4. I am putting the final touches on our Black Friday sale, so be sure to check back here on the blog for more details.  We have several products to feature, as well as a bunch of freebies to be had!

Happy First Birthday to my Elaine!

Birth of Elaine Cristin HamiltonOne year ago today I checked into the hospital around 3:30 p.m.  I looked like this (left).  At 9:54 p.m. we found out that our baby was a girl when she was born by c-section (below).

Elaine Day 3

On November 5, 2009 I added the title mommy to my name.  It has been an amazing and wonderful journey.  From her first bath, to eating carrots, to learning how to hold her head up and sit alone. Then she got some teeth and learned how to crawl.  Now she is a walking, jabbering, bundle of energy. There were sleepless teething nights, but there were also giggles and the pleasure of her smile.  I just think she is so cute!

Everyone seems to notice her eyes first.  I never get tired of hearing them comment, “Look at those eyes!” because I get to reply, “They are like her daddy’s eyes.”  She has an adventuresome spirit like Ben, too.  I think she will be petite like her Grandma Hamilton, but she definitely has Grandpa Godby’s strong lungs & voice!  Every day I get to stay home and take care of Elaine.  We have so much fun together!  I cannot believe she is a year old – has it really been that long since she came home with us?  I can’t wait to see what the future holds for her little life, and how God will use her in His plan!

Obsession Confession–Robyn from “What Mama Wants”

Name: Robyn Lucas

Children: Five Children, Ethan 13, Madelynn 10, Chesney 7, Tommy 4, Emelia 19 mos.

Occupation: Stay at home mama, Work at home mama (Robyn’s Sweet Cheeks Cloth Diapers), Blogging mama (What Mama Wants), wife, sister, daughter!

Where do you live? We live in Southern Oregon

Is your hubby on board with using cloth diapers? Definitely! He was my biggest supporter from day one! He changes diapers like a pro, except prefolds, he’s a little clueless there! If it’s a poopy diaper he just puts it in the bathroom sink, he claims ignorance on that front even though I have shown him a million times what to do with a poopy diaper!

When did you start cloth diapering? I cloth diapered my oldest son 12 years ago with Gerber prefolds, pins and plastic pants because of a bad diaper rash. I was a young mama and wasn’t up to the “challenge” and switched back to disposables after a month! I decided to make the switch to  cloth diapers when I was pregnant with my youngest and my second youngest was still in diapers. Our starter stash was delivered in the mail the day I got home from the hospital with the new baby. I started using the One Size diapers I had ordered on my toddler and transitioned to cloth on my newborn as soon as the diapers fit her at about 6 weeks.

What was your main reason for switching to cloth diapers? At first it was for budget reasons, we have five children. Then I found out about the chemicals in disposables and never looked back! Yuck!

What is your favorite brand and style of diapers? Do I have to choose? I am thoroughly addicted to cloth diapers! I love them all! I like prefolds for the simplicity. I love pockets because they are so daddy friendly! I really love to use fitteds under wool for nighttime. I haven’t tried all the diaper I would like to, and probably never will because I love them all. I like Fuzzibunz and LOVE trying out WAHM diapers!

How many diapers are in your stash? Oh my, over 60!

Share a blooper or “newbie” story from your cloth diapering experiences. I had numerous issues with washing when we first began. I didn’t realize what a fine balance there is on the amount of detergent to use. I ended up stripping my diapers for four days, all day long, just getting the bubbles out of the rinse water. But I think the best stories are mostly daddy stories. How he once put a fitted diaper on the baby without a cover because he didn’t know it wasn’t waterproof, and the time he only put a cover on her because he thought it was a diaper!

Do you have a tip to share with others? Take it slow! Don’t buy your whole stash at once or of just one type of diaper. I love different diaper styles for different situations!

When you started using cloth diapers, you wish you had known          ? About Rockin Green! I think it is a Cloth Diaper Mama’s Must Have!

What is the greatest issue or problem you’ve had with cloth diapers, and how did you resolve it? Build-up of detergent residue. I stripped, and stripped, and stripped, and stripped some more!

Regarding cloth diapers, you would like to know             ? How many diapers is enough? I don’t think there is a magic number, I want one of each!

What are your other hobbies, interests, and obsessions? I love to sew (cloth diapers of course), craft, read, cook, blog, and just be a mommy!

Do you have favorite blogs and websites? My favorite blog is my own, What Mama Wants, but I also love Thrifty Nifty Mommy, The Small Town Mom, Cloth Diaper Addiction, The Cloth Diaper Whisperer and so many more, I love blogs!

How would you describe your personality? Funny thing, I am pretty shy! But I have a mama’s heart and love to help people.

Remember, you can be featured here on the Doable Diapers Blog with your own “Obsession Confession”!  Just send an email to info@doablediapers.com to request our survey.  Just return your answers, and you could be next!

The Doable Details: FuzziBunz One Size Diaper Review

guest post by Emily DeCosta

Let me just say, I love cloth diapers! Specifically, I love pocket diapers! I first started off cloth diapering when we found out that we were going to have two little ones in diapers at the same time. My first cloth diaper stash consisted of just prefolds and covers in two sizes for my kids. While it did save me money, I wasn't totally satisfied with what I had bought. They leaked on my son and they just seemed so bulky on my petite little girl.

Packaging
Then I had the opportunity to try out pocket diapers. The FuzziBunz one-size pocket diaper is great! When it first arrived, I have to say that I was impressed with the packaging. It had great instructions on the back and it even came with a number to call if you needed help! I also liked the fact that it came with an extra set of elastics for the leg gussets. It has not just one insert, but two. The smaller one is for newborns and the larger one is for older children.

Fit
Now that my son is almost potty trained, I just use cloth diapers on my daughter. I'm sure I could use these diapers on him if I needed too. The diaper has several snaps to adjust the size around the legs and waist. At first, I though it looked a little confusing, but I quickly figured it out without having to call the number on the back of the package. It also has adjustable elastic across the back at the waist and around the legs. It makes for a great fit on chubby babies or skinny babies. These elastics eliminate the need for extra snaps on the cover. My daughter is tall and thin at 18 pounds and 30 inches and this diaper adjusts to fit her so snugly.

Absorbency
To test out the diaper, I used both inserts in the diaper overnight for extra absorption and it was great. My daughter is a heavy wetter and her clothes were dry the next morning. I was amazed at how much the inserts absorbed and how the fleece felt so much dryer against her skin. I also tried them out during the day with only the large insert and it worked just as well.

Cleaning
This diaper is just as easy as other cloth diapers to clean and dry. The microfiber inserts both dried very well on just a regular cycle in the dryer. I usually try to line dry my covers, but there were a few times that I put it into the dryer and it came out just fine.

Expense
The initial cost may be a little high for those on a very tight budget, but I do see how the diaper will pay for itself in the long run. There is no need to buy two or more sizes of diapers for your little one. The FuzziBunz one size diaper will work for your newborn until they are potty trained. There is an added benefit for those that have two children in diapers. They can be adjusted to fit both children! For a one size diaper that can do it all, I highly recommend this FuzziBunz diaper!
