Monthly Report: Cloth Diapering at Three Months

Nolan turned three months old…10 days ago!  Where does the time go?  He is a drooly, noisy, smiling mess {in a good way}, and so different from the sleepy newborn that I brought home from the hospital!

On his three-month “birthday” we weighed Nolan at home and he measured 14 pounds 12 ounces.  His growth has slowed down a little, but many of his 3-6 month outfits are already quite snug!

Nolan recently sized up in both his Rumparooz and his FuzziBunz One Size diapers.  I can hardly believe that he wears the same size diaper as my almost-two-year old daughter.  But then again, there is a mere 8 pound difference between them!

For night time Nolan still wears a Rumparooz diaper with a microfiber insert, but he uses both parts of the 6R soaker.  He sleeps around 8 hours {usually}.  If he does wake up to nurse in the early morning, I don’t change his diaper.  He is almost always in his overnight diaper for 8-10 hours, and we have not had any leaks.

Nolan wears some Perfect Size FuzziBunz (small size) that I had from Elaine.  I do think that they give a little bit better fit than the One Size diapers.  I think this is mostly because the elastic isn’t cinched so tight.  That said, if his runny EBF poo is going to leak, it finds a gap easier in the Perfect Fit than in the One Size.

I really need to test the bumGenius one size diapers on Nolan.  I just realized that he hasn’t worn one yet, though I’m sure they fit now.  I tried them at newborn and one month, and didn’t get a good fit around the legs.  I only own three bumGenius diapers, and I have been keeping them in Elaine’s stash.  The Flip One Size diaper cover fits Nolan well, though I am finding I prefer the double gussets of the Rumparooz One Size diaper cover.

I am supplementing my stash with some prefolds her and there so that I only wash every other day.  It was getting to be too much laundry!

I would like to include a note about the fit of One Size diapers on Elaine.  I really like the FuzziBunz diapers on her right now because I feel that I can get a more exact fit.  She seems to be between the medium and large rise settings on the Rumparooz, and I have been struggling with quite a few leaks.  With the FuzziBunz the leg elastic can be adjusted very minimally to allow a little extra room without a gap.  The hip and waist snaps also help to get a more exact fit.  Elaine is a skinny little girl, but I am happy to report that she finally made it over 22 pounds!

Monthly Report: Cloth Diapering at Two Months

Master Nolan is now two months old!  Why does the time fly by so quickly when they are little and cuddly, yet it drags by when they are in the terrible twos? 

Anyway, I thought I would let you know about cloth diapers on a two month old.  Nolan is now on the “small” (one row of snaps showing) Rumparooz rise setting.  Today I had to let out the waist on his FuzziBunz one size diapers.  I also packed away the newborn prefolds and covers.  Nolan wears the small size prefold with a Snappi and  Rumparooz One Size Cover on the small rise setting.

We are using primarily pocket diapers.  I have enough pockets now that I am not changing Nolan every 2 hours.  I change him at every feeding, and if he poops.  I pull out the prefolds if I get behind in my diaper laundry!

Nolan slept through the night every night last week (7+ hours each night).  I just used a Rumparooz pocket diaper with both inserts.  The microfiber is plenty absorbent for him at this point.  He has worn an Eco Posh Fitted diaper and Wool Cover to bed several times.  I just don’t like to have the dampness of a fitted diaper against his skin for so long.  My first choice for overnight diapering is a pocket with either hemp or bamboo insert, but Nolan doesn’t need that much absorbency yet.

At this age, my daughter was wetting very heavily at night, so we used bamboo or hemp fitteds, or a Rumparooz pocket with hemp inserts.

We also went back to cloth wipes now that I feel like I have my routine under control slightly better.  Two little ones is a lot to keep up with!  As mentioned earlier this week, my husband requested that we go back to pre-moistened wipes, so that is what we are doing for now.

I will say that my preference is leaning toward Rumparooz diapers right now.  I didn’t know about Rumparooz with Elaine at this age.  I love the gussets for catching the runny EBF poo!  I have only had a couple of leaks total, so it’s not like my FuzziBunz don’t work.  However, without the gussets the poo is usually right there ready to come out the leg openings.  I’m also struggling to find “Nolan’s setting” on the FuzziBunz so the Rumparooz are just a little easier. My husband prefers the Rumparooz because of the vertical snaps on the waist, and no hip snaps to worry about.

For comparison purposes, Nolan is almost 13 pounds.

Monthly Report: Cloth Diapering at One Month

Nolan turned four weeks old today, and he will be a month old on Saturday.  He is now over 10 pounds (7 lbs. 6 oz. at birth). I thought I would post an update to our cloth diapering – to let you know what we are doing, what doesn’t work, and what has changed since he was a newborn.

Nolan only wore the FuzziBunz extra small diapers for two weeks.  He is gaining weight much quicker than Elaine did.  I also packed away the newborn prefolds.  The size was still fine, but with only six layers in the center panel they just weren’t absorbent past an hour!

Our stash now consists of seven Rumparooz One Size pocket diapers, five FuzziBunz One Size Pocket Diapers, seven FuzziBunz Perfect Fit Diapers, one Knickernappies One Size diaper, one Doopsy SD trim fit, and eight small prefolds with two Newborn Rumparooz Covers.

As I mentioned before, I am using FuzziBunz small inserts in the Rumparooz diapers.  The larger portion of the 6R soaker is too big, but the newborn insert wasn’t absorbent enough at this stage.  The FuzziBunz small inserts are wide and four layers thick so they are very absorbent.  They fit perfectly in the Rumparooz with the rise on the smallest setting.  Nolan can go 4-5 hours in one of these diapers at night.

The prefolds still don’t seem to be as absorbent as I would like, so I reach for the pocket diapers first.  We always take pockets in the diaper bag.  Nolan is still wearing the Rumparooz Newborn covers on the medium rise setting, but I think he is about ready to let them all the way out to the large setting.

I had to let out the waist on the FuzziBunz one size diapers.  Perhaps I didn’t quite have the sizing right before, but Nolan is growing rapidly, so he was ready for some breathing room.  The Perfect Fit FuzziBunz are a little high in the rise, and a smidge loose around the legs.  Elaine and Nolan both have skinny legs and thighs, so I think that is the reason the fit isn’t quite right.  They work well for daytime use when I am changing Nolan more frequently.

I am looking forward to testing the new Rumparooz Eco-Posh Wool Cover on Nolan with my Doopsy Bamboo Fitted.  I also have an old bumGenius Bamboo Fitted that should fit soon.  This will be our overnight routine and we will see how it goes!

We are washing diapers about every 36 hours.  This is mostly due to the fact that I don’t have a dryer, so I have to allow for hang dry time.  I also stopped using my cloth wipes for a while.  It is a lot to hang out, then to fold, etc.  I was getting overwhelmed with the volume of laundry and taking care of both kiddos.  So we decided to use disposable wipes and napkins for a little bit until I am better adjusted to life as a mommy of two!
